So she and her estranged friends make their way into the forest in search of what was lost, not knowing if they’ll ever come out again. When an anonymous text message invites them all to play a dangerous game and find the aforementioned creepy beckoning ghost, Sara knows this is her only chance to find her sister. Since then, life’s pretty much gone back to normal, barring the fact that all her old friends are now terrified of her. She’s looking for her sister Becca, who disappeared a year ago. Sara’s not in pursuit of the unknown, though. On the one hand, survival on the other, Leroy Jenkins-ing it into the dark woods in pursuit of the unknown. I can never decided if horror makes us more likely to survive a horror scenario or less. Which really is what we’re all here for, right? I mean, clearly if once a year a mysterious path appeared in the forest and a ghost beckoned you into the trees, we are the crowd that would be like “yeah, okay, sign me up.” Or maybe we’re the “not today Satan” crowd. I mean anything that references The Blair Witch Project in its synopsis is going to get my attention, because the comparison automatically promises spine tingling, checking-over-your-shoulder terror.

Engaged to track down a mysterious boy who disappeared. He is the author of the New York Times-bestseller Black Leopard, Red Wolf, which was a finalist for the National Book Award for fiction in 2019. Tracker is known far and wide for his skills as a hunter: 'He has a nose,' people say. Marlon James was born in Jamaica in 1970. Try it, if the audio book doesn’t work then give the novel a go. Nominee for Best Fantasy (2019) In the first novel in Marlon James's Dark Star trilogy, myth, fantasy, and history come together to explore what happens when a mercenary is hired to find a missing child. Marlon James weaves African bush fairytales with nightmarish characters and head spinning imagery the whole way through. The fictional Africa in Black Leopard, Red Wolf feels like a place mapped by Gabriel García Márquez and Hieronymus Bosch with an assist from Salvador Dalí. It’s an adventure, but not in the overdone format of the hero arc indeed by the end most messages and lessons are well up in the air for debate! It’s certainly unclear if who our “hero” is anyway. The book is an experience, like a play, a journey. Even the long train-of-thought monologues were gorgeous to listen to, if a bit head ache inducing at times. I had no issues with the narrator’s accent and genuinely thought it brought authenticity and flesh to the tale. it’s meandering but punctuated with enough jarring incidents to keep the listener riveted. Read some Burroughs for Christ’s sake!!) This reminds me of the Vorrh, China Mieville, Jeff vandermeer. Where to begin? This is dreamlike prose bloody and gorgeous and obviously offensive to some. But I think the appreciation for this story should be regarding its construction and structure, maybe a little less for the story qua story. A reader might, after finishing it, be a little disappointed or underwhelmed. It does not take long to read this little story and there is no need to really savor the prose. Zweig is not known for his erudite and highbrow language. The book is a spare 84 pages and rather simply written. Zweig was not a prolific writer, but he did produce a number of works from 1900 onward. He and his wife were found dead, holding hands, from a drug overdose. From there he traveled to New York City and then finally to a mountain in Rio de Janeiro. In 1934, he left Germany (presumably to avoid the political situation) for London. Zweig (1881 – 1942) was born in Vienna and received his doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1904. Chess Story (or The Royal Game) a translation of the German Schachnovelle is a novella published in 1941 by Stefan Zweig. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. The reasons for the venomous hatred of Jews, and other groups like them in countries around the world, are also explored, as are misconceptions of Nazi Germany. He presents eye-opening insights into the development of the ghetto culture-a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves “friends” of blacks-which is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity, and he reexamines the tragic institution of slavery. Recently, some smug critics have written off Dahl because a few of his books feature tinges of racism (and some full frontal racism), most notably The B.F.G. I've got a short rant for you, then we’ll get started. If I ever answer my own 7 Questions, The Witches by Roald Dahl would be one of my top three books and Roald Dahl would probably be my choice for lunch date. I love all middle grade books, as you know, but this is the one I read when I was in the third grade that completely seized my imagination forever and hooked me on reading for life. Yes, you read that correctly, and no, I don’t consider it a slam to the other books I've reviewed. Why so important? The Witches by Roald Dahl is my favorite middle grade book of all time. But as this week is nearly over, I’m just going to push those interviews back a little longer and focus instead on a very important Book of the Week. I'll begin posting those again as of next week and we’ll return you to your regularly scheduled ninja. Happy Halloween, Esteemed Reader! I've got some great writer interviews and interviews with literary agents coming up.
